How to Listen to Audio or Watch Videos (if available)

You can listen to the course audio lessons by clicking on the links titled, "Listen to Audio." You can also watch the video lessons by clicking on the links titled, "Watch Video." Feel free to download these lessons to your hard drive for future playback and to share with others. Some audio lessons are also available in the MP3 format. There are a variety of players available on the Internet that will play these back on your computer. If you wish to listen to these lessons away from a computer, they will also play back on an MP3 player which can be purchased at a store or on the internet.

When they are available, we have provided videos for several different players. These players include: RealMedia®, QuickTime®, Windows Media® Player and Flash Player®. For your convenience, here are links to various audio and video players for the files on our site.

How to Use GlobalReach.org’s Multi-Lingual Features

Globalreach.org has two features which will allow you to browse in one language and download documents in another language. They are Select Language Menus and Webpage Language Switching. Select Language Menus appear when the course and lesson you have selected is available in another language. Once you have selected another language, links to the available documents (and media, if available) will appear. If more than one lesson is available, you will need to select the language for each lesson. These links will appear in the language you are downloading from, not the language you are browsing in. However, the filenames will appear in the Status bar (the bottom bar) of your browser, and that can help you locate the file that you want. See "What do the filenames mean?" for further help.

Webpage Language Switching refers to the ability to switch to the exact same course page in any language offered on Globalreach.org. Browse to the page you want in your first language. Then go to the “Discover Resources in Your Language” pulldown menu on the upper left of the page and select the new language you want to view in. This is valuable to help you learn the second language better, or to make it more clear to you if you don’t understand some words in the first language.

What do the filenames mean?

The filenames help us to keep track of the many different files in the different languages offered on GlobalReach. But they can also help you when you are downloading files in another language.

To help you understand, we will give an example. The Great Questions of Life , Lesson 1 Acrobat file in Russian is E0100ruL01.pdf

  • E0100 is the course number, which will always be the same no matter what language it is found in.
  • The next 1 or 2 letters designate the language, usually the International Linguistic Code for that language. However, we usually substitute E for English, S for Spanish and F for French. In this case the “ru” stands for Russian and is given in lower case to help distinguish those letters from the others.
  • The “L” and the two numbers following are lesson numbers. 00 is the introduction, if available. This may also be substituted by SR for Student Reports and AS for Answer Sheets, if available. If the entire course is in one file then “Entire” will be in place of the “L” number.

Special Notes for QuickTime® Players

If your QuickTime Player will not stream our videos, try the following:
  1. Open the QuickTime Player application.
  2. Go to QuickTime Preferences.
    1. Macintosh - QuickTime Player menu -> QuickTime Preferences
    2. Windows - Edit menu -> Preferences -> QuickTime Preferences
  3. Click on the streaming tab and set the streaming speed to the correct speed for your network connection (the default setting in QuickTime 7 is "Automatic" which does not work)…
    1. If you have dialup or slow Internet service, set the speed for 56K.
    2. If you have DSL or “Fast Internet” service, try setting this at 256K. If that doesn’t seem to stream smoothly, try setting it at 112K.
    3. Streaming video files require a minimum connection speed of 56Kbps, 1Mbps or faster connections will get the highest quality video.
  4. Return to your web browser and try to connect to the streamed audio or video file again. If this does not work, you may have a firewall problem.
If that is the case, try this:
  1. Go to the QuickTime Preferences, click the advanced tab and "Custom..." for Transport Setup.
  2. If you DO NOT have a firewall installed, the transport setting should be "Use UDP, RTSP Port ID:554". This is the most efficient transport method, but it will not work if you have to get through a firewall.
  3. If you DO have a firewall on your network connection, streaming transport should be set to "Use HTTP Port ID:80". Close the preference window, then try playing the online audio/video again.
